The saxophonist Eric Alexander has found an almost infallible formula that has led him to be one of the most outstanding saxophonists of his generation when it comes to the more classical jazz tradition. The recipe is summarized in the '4 Bs': blues, ballads, bosses and boppers.
With that alchemy well mixed in the choice of songs to play, Eric Alexander has achieved, once again, that his new album 'The real thing' has an attractive sound, where the best past of jazz is alive and present. And no, it doesn't sound old, quite the contrary; many of those jazzmen who call themselves modern would like it to sound like this musician and his band.
His band. One of the best things this saxophonist has achieved is to create a band, a stable formation that they have been playing together for many years. And that shows; the filling, the cleaning of the sound, the interpretative freedom, the swing that they distill. With him are his friend, teacher and mentor Harold Mabern, drummer Joe Farnsworth and double bassist John Webber, and on this album they have been joined by guitarist Pat Martino, another of the important names in Alexander's training and subsequent career.
The most bopper part of the album is in a formidable 'The Night Has A Thousand Eyes' and 'For George and Trane', where the saxophone gives free rein to its more coltrenian side; the look to the bossa is in the charming 'Little boat', a theme of Roberto Menescal; The blues is in the version of 'Summertime', with a great Pat Martino, and the ballads have their representation in 'Sleep Warm', and as Harold Marben was always a very muscular pianist for the end have left 'The Chief'.
Yes, if you like jazz well played, clean, nice, brilliant, then this is, by far, your record.

Review from DownBeat (by Yoshi Kato):
Since he began recording under his own name almost 25 years ago, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander has led at least 15 sessions with double bassist John Webber and drummer Joe Farnsworth -- frequently rounded out by pianist and mentor Harold Mabern (the respected pianist was a teacher for classmates Alexander and Farnsworth at William Paterson University).
Second Impression features Mabern, Farnsworth and, in what was likely his final recording session, bassist Bob Cranshaw, who was name-checked in the spoken-word introduction to the Alexander composition "Blueski For Vonski" on his 2014 Chicago Fire album.
The "second impression" may subconsciously be a nod to a trio of atypical tracks that feature Cranshaw on an electric bass guitar and Mabern on a Fender Rhodes that were both found in the studio, as the liner notes explain. Farnsworth's funky "Jennie's Dance" struts assuredly with an authoritative and somewhat surprising extended solo by the pianist on that cult-worthy keyboard.
Sammy Fain and Paul F. Webster's "Secret Love" is buoyed by the partially electrified rhythm section. Alexander solos with elan while Mabern glides in another expanded exploration just prior to Farnsworth's demonstration in rhythmic fluency.
The Wes Montgomery classic "Full House" closes out Second Impressions with flair; the bandleader's spry tone matches the spirit of the piece, and Cranshaw seems to subtly propel the group forward with his note choices and reliable ease.

Even
in these trying and uncertain times, there are some professional
creative artists who recognize the need to "carry on" and make the best
of a bad situation. Saxophonist Cory Weeds is one of those individuals.
He is releasing O Sole Mio! Music From The Motherland on his own label,
CellarMusic. Weeds has merged his talents as an alto saxophonist with
Mike LeDonne's Groover Quartet featuring LeDonne on Hammond B3 organ,
Eric Alexander on tenor saxophone, Peter Bernstein on guitar and Joe
Farnsworth on drums. Each of these participants is a highly regarded
jazz virtuoso in his own right, and has bee, or is, a leader of his own
group. Support for this Italian-themed session (great Italian music
and/or Italian-American composers such as Henry Mancini, Chick Corea and
Pat Martino came from Guilio Recchioni of the Italian Cultural Center
in Vancouver B.C.
The first two tracks in this release are both
burners. The title track was comes from Naples, where it was written in
1898, and was covered by operatic tenors such as Enrico Caruso and
Luciano Pavarotti. The band shows how serious they are about swinging
with all the members having solos that are both juicy and individual.
Mancini's well known theme "Mr.Lucky" gives this smart aggregation a
chance to demonstrate their unscripted interplay, which is based on
their considerable talent and vast experience. Another well-known number
is "Speak Softly Love," easily recognized as the background music from
the movie The Godfather. Built around Farnsworth's Latin beat, Weeds'
alto opens the offering by stating the theme, after which Alexander's
fluid tenor saxophone weaves and darts around the melody in exquisite
fashion. Guitarist Bernstein then comes in with some crisp riffs, after
which LeDonne's B3 shows off a burly yet fervent tone. This is a
terrific take on the number.
Chick Corea, whose heritage is from
Southern Italy, wrote "Chick's Tune," which is based on the chord
changes from the popular song "You Stepped Out Of A Dream." The band
keeps the pace at a high energy level with Weeds' alto leading the way.
There is some stellar guitar work from Bernstein and Eric Alexander then
takes his tenor sax on a euphoric run. LeDonne's B3 charges out of the
gate with soulful depth followed by an extensive drum kit workout from
Farnsworth. The band then takes the number out with a repeat of the
theme. The final track is "Capricci Di Camere" which originated as
bassist Paul Chambers' composition "Whims Of Chambers," which was also
the title of his 1957 album from Blue Note. Originally structured by
Chambers as a walking bass line for a blues in F, the group restates
this same line to open the tune and uses it as a frame from which to
explore the number. Each of the players takes a piece of the action with
LeDonne at his ebullient best. At this point all one can say is
"arrivederci."

Incluso
Music From The Motherland en su propio sello,
CellarMusic.
de acordes de la popular canción "You Stepped Out Of A Dream".

Liner Notes / Review (by Randy Johnston):
Frode's guitar playing is a blend of great ideas, intense technical facility, crisp and clear tone, and swinging time, all delivered with an intense emotionalism reminiscent not of the Scandinavian 'cool school', but of the finest American hard groovers. Appearing on this set of five Kjekstad originals, three standards, and one jazz original (Eddie Harris' classic 'Cold Duck Time') along with the guitarist are three of New York City's finest musicians: organist Mike LeDonne, saxophonist Eric Alexander, and drummer Joe Farnsworth. These gentlemen need no introduction to serious jazz fans, and they play beautifully together on this album which will touch your soul and get your feet tapping as well.

Album Notes:
Michael Weiss will celebrate 40 years of living and working in NYC next year; a major milestone in a city full of brilliant jazz pianists. One of the busiest pianists and composers in jazz, Michael was a key member of the Johnny Griffin quartet for over 15 years, and is himself entering the status of jazz legend alongside some of his peers. A true double threat as a dazzling pianist along with a thoughtful and deep composer, Michael was recognized early on as a bright light in jazz, having won the BMI Thelonious Monk composer competition and place second in the Monk International Jazz Piano competition. With these accolades, it is fitting that Michael and the quartet choose to cover the Monk classic 'Epistrophy' on this fantastic album, his debut for Cellar Music Group.
In addition to the nod to Monk, Michael selects 4 of his original compositions on his Cellar Music Group debut, coupled with some lesser known standards by Jimmy van Heusen and Antonio Carlos Jobim, finished off with the Fats Waller staple, Jitterbug Waltz. The band for this recording is truly stellar. Eric Alexander is himself one of the great instrumentalists of his generation, and the perfect foil to Michael on this exciting recording. Paul Gill and Pete van Nostrand are veterans of the New York jazz scene and the feeling of joyful swing and near-kinetic interplay are immediately apparent from the first song. Together, this quartet of burning New York jazz veterans bring a sophistication and soul to the recordings that can only be attained from decades of playing in the jazz capital of the world.
Persistence is an apropros title for an album of musicians who have never given up on the mastery of their instrument, or this music.
